その前身を Boys として知られるモッズフリークにはおなじみのジ・アクション音源集2枚。

1枚目 'The Ultimate!'
1965年から67年にリリースした５枚の全シングル音源+未発表音源で構成された編集盤で、裏ジャケのポール・ウェラーのライナーによると、これら未発表曲は当時彼らが結局はたせなかったアルバム・リリースの為レコーディングされたものではないか？という事です。モッズ好みの黒いR&Bビートが疾走するも、個人的にはそれ程ファンでないので言葉続かず・・。

2枚目 'Action Speak Louder Than...'
ジ・アクションから Mighty Baby への移行期に録られたデモ音源集で、ジ・アクション名義でのリリースはどうか？という音でビートファン向けではありませんが、個人的には、R&B/Soul ビート時代の彼らより、ほのかにアンダーグラウンド・サイケの香り漂うこちらの方が好きだったりします。またこの編集盤は、公式では、ジ・アクション、ザ・バーズそれぞれ12インチシングル盤としてリリースされてるもののようですが、手持ちのはA面にザ・バーズ、B面にジ・アクションが収録されたプロモーショナル・アルバムになってるのでこんな紹介の仕方になってしまいました。。。ザ・バーズについては、ザ・バーズの項にて。

1962年頃イングランド北部ニューカッスル・ベースで活動してた、アニマルズの前身オルガン奏者アラン・プライスのリーダー・グループ Alan Price Combo にエリック・バードンが加入し、翌1963年彼らの野獣のように獰猛なステージングから命名されたジ・アニマルズへと改名。1964年ロンドンへ拠点を移し Columbia レーベルとの契約でメジャーデビュー。

この2枚は彼らのファーストとセカンドアルバムで、"Blue feeling" だったり "Baby let me take you home", "Inside looking out" や、当時カヴァー曲として人気のあった "I'm crying" なんて曲は入ってないのでこの辺はシングルコンピやベスト盤で。何はともあれ、ストーンズと並んでブリティッシュ・インヴェイションのリズム＆ブルーズ・サイドでの中心的存在のグループで、トランスワールド・サウンドを聴いてると、当時如何に彼らが影響力を持っていたか再認識させられる事しきり。また、トラディショナルの素晴らしい焼き直しナンバー、涙が止まらない永遠の名曲 "House of the rising sun（朝日のあたる家）" 的フォークロック路線がメインのグループだと思い込んで聴かず嫌いは損ですぞ。まあ、良くも悪くも若干こじんまりまとまり過ぎの感は否めないスタジオ盤からは、グループ名の由来となった当時のラフでワイルドなライヴ・パフォーマンスはあまり感じられないものの、それを差し引いても、やはり、初期音源の真っ黒に染まった深く濃い味わいのクールないぶし銀リズム＆ブルーズ群は渋カッコ良く、一聴の価値ありです。

ロン・ウッドのお兄さん Arthur Wood 中心にロンドンで結成された渋めのリズム＆ブルーズコンボで、後に Roundabout ~ Deep Purple のハモンド・オルガニストとして世界的に確固とした地位を確立する Jon Lord の控えめながらツボを押さえたモッドな鍵盤プレイも彼らのサウンドには欠かせない。当時ジ・アートウッズとしてリリースされたのは、LP 1枚、EP 4枚、そして7吋を Decca から5枚と Parlophone, Fontana から各1枚。

唯一のアルバムでモッズフリークはマスト。

'100 Oxford Street'
当時リリースされたほとんどのシングル音源とオリジナルアルバムからの選曲による編集盤で、カヴァー、オリジナルともにオーセンティックなリズメン・ブルーズ一色に染められたオリジナルアルバムでは味わえない "If I ever get my hands on you" に顕著なスカ調のオフビートを取り入れたサウンドや、唯一チャートを賑わせた Sam & Dave "I take what I want" のナイス・カヴァーでのフィードバックすれすれのファズギターが聴けたりするこの編集盤のシングルサイドは個人的にオリジナルアルバムより面白くて好きです。

'Live!'
解散直前にデンマークで行われたライヴを収めたもので、スタジオでの彼らしか知らない人にとってはどっちへ転ぶか、いずれにせよ、一般的な渋いモッドなリズム・アンド・ブルーズ・コンボというイメージを覆すに余りあるハイパーでラウドでロウでサヴェージでワイルドな、アナザー・サイド・オブというより、これが彼ら本来の姿なのかもとも思える生き生きとしたパフォーマンスが収録されてて、初めて聴いた時は耳を疑うと同時に、それまで抱いてた優等生なお坊ちゃま的イメージが瞬時に吹き飛んだ代物です。中でもA面ラストの長尺 Sam Cooke "Shake" でのイントロからエンディングまでテンションを落とす事なくニュージーランドの Chants R&B よろしく突っ走る様は壮絶で圧巻。

蛇足： Deep Purple "Hush" のプロモ見た事ありますか？ダンスパーティでのハウスバンド設定で、リッチーがデカヘッドのストラトじゃなくギブソン335弾いてたり、ジョン・ロードがヒップなハモンドでブイブイ言わせてたり、またゲスト連中も時代を反映したサイケな装いで、ティーンダンスパーティのゴーゴー・スタイルからドラッグ・パーティへの若干中途半端な過渡期的光景が印象的な興味深い映像です。

Note

The pre-Betterdays called Saints Combo led by both permanent crew, a guitarist Richard Broczek and a drums Frank Tyler, had been formed as the Rock'n Roll band influenced by Chuck Berry etc. at St. Boniface college, Plymouth. But by late 1962 their repertoire had shifted to such a solid wild Rhythm & Blues numbers as by John Lee Hooker, Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf, Jimmy Reed and Bo Diddley, also by then all permanent crew had fixed.

ここに紹介するのは、Raw Drivin' Wildest R&B Combo ザ・ベターデイズが1960年代に残した全音源 + α の編集盤です。

1960年にイギリス南西のはずれ Plymouth （プリマス） で結成され、当初は Saints(Combo) と名乗り、U.S. ロックンロールをレパートリーに地元のクラブサーキットなどを始め、その後 R&B への熱き想いの高まりと共にレパートリーも R&B に埋め尽くされ、1962年後半迄にはかなり知られる存在に。そして、1964年早々、ブルーズメン Sonny Terry & Brownie McGee が1957年にリリースしたアルバム 'Sing' 収録の "Better Day" を引用し Betterdays へと改名。

初レコーディングは、1964年10月 Oak レーベルにて、Bo Diddley "Crackin' up", "Here 'tis", Jimmy Reed "Aw shucks hush your mouth" の3曲をアセテートに刻む。翌年早々、オルガン、ブルーズハープの B. Pitcher による彼ら唯一のオリジナル "Don't want that" と、J. Reed "Baby what's wrong" を "Honey what's wrong" と改題してプロモ用のデモをアセテート録音。このカヴァーヴァージョンは激ロウ！そして、オリジナルもプリティーズ張りのロウな R&B パーンク！Polydor と契約後同年9月のレコーディング時には、"Don't want that" にエレピも挿入され若干コジャレた雰囲気が漂うも、同時にパンク度もアップしたナイス･ヴァージョンに仕上がってます。B面は "Here 'tis" 再録版。

ちょっと話を戻して、アセテートに刻んだ "Baby what's wrong" が放つ激ロウでクルードで狂暴な音像はホント凄まじい。リズムを刻むというより暴力的で直線的なハンマー・ビートを叩きつけるドラムス、アセテートの劣悪な音質により増幅された潰れ具合が堪らなくエグいギター、そして、乱暴に歌詞を吐き捨てるスナッティ・ヴォーカル、この容赦なく一斉攻撃を仕掛けるガサツでつんのめる様な音塊がこの上なくガレージ魂をアジテートしてくるんです。もう、パーフェクト！

尚、1991/92年にそれぞれEPでこれらの音源がオリジナル･メンバー監修のもと公式リリースされ、なんとドイツのベルリンでは、このEP盤リリースに伴い何週間かチャート･アクションがあり、最高で17位まで上るヒットを記録したとか・・・ 所変わればって感じですね。

それから、この編集盤では、1991年と93年に録られたオリジナル･メンバーによる再録＆ライヴ･レコーディング音源に加え、1964年の 'Quay Club' での熱いライヴ音源も追加収録されてます。劣化したテープ起こしのサウンドが熱い！
