テキサス州フォートワースのフェイマス・ガレージパンク・コンボ ラリー＆ザ・ブルー・ノーツが1965年から1968年に残した公式音源、変名リリース、未発表音源を含めた編集盤です。

オープニングは、ファズパンクとして有名な "In & out" の未発表ノン・ファズ・ヴァージョン！ペラペラですがナチュラルサウンド派の僕にとっては癖になる音触です。"Night of the phantom" の替え歌ヴァージョン "Night of the sadist" では、ヴォーカルのロックモアが披露するサックスソロがいいアクセントになってます。更に、短くリタイトルされた "Phantom" では、なんと、音楽的には全く繋がりのない "♪ヘイヘイポーラ〜" でおなじみのポールとポーラのポール、本名 Ray Hildebrand がコーラス参加しているそうです。

マネージャー兼プロデューサーの Major Bill Smith 氏という人物は、当時かなり手広くやってたようで、ポールとポーラのメジャーヒット曲 "Hey Paula" を彼のマイナーレーベル LeCam より Jill & Ray という本名でのデュオ名義でリリースしてたようで、その後メジャーデビューと同時に Paul & Paula へ改名したとの事。とまあ、そんな縁がありポールことレイ・ヒルドブランドが彼らのレコーディングに参加したようです。ついでに、"Rockin' bones", "Action packed" でおなじみの Ronnie Dowson は、メジャー・ビル氏のもとセッション・ドラマーとしても活動しており、"ヘイ・ポーラ" でも叩いてるそうです。

何のレビューかわかんなくなってきましたが、え〜と、レイドバック・パンク R&B "Talk about love" は、ゲストプレイヤー Ron-Dels の Delbert McLinton によるブルーズハープがめちゃ気持ちいいです。Ron-Dels は、このシリーズの2番に収録されており、そこでも心地良いブルーズハープが聴けます。また、ザ・ブルーノーツの代表曲 "Night of the phantom" も尺の都合か？2番に収録されおり、他に Elite, Jades などが収録されてるこの編集盤もお薦めの一枚。それからノースウェストの Wailers "It's you alone" 演ってます、好きなバラッドパンクの1曲。

蛇足：彼らは幾つかの変名リリースの他、なんと同郷テキサス州サンアントニオの Sir Douglas Quintet を名乗ってツアーした事もあるらしい、これらは全て Major Bill Smith 氏の仕業のようです。

蛇足：このサイト始めた頃は知らなかったんですが、当時フォートワースの TV 番組に "Teen-A-Go-Go" という音楽番組があり、彼らも出演してたようです。偶然にしては・・・まぁありがちなネーミングではあるんですけどね。

蛇足：手広くやってたメジャービル氏について調べれば調べるほど色んな繋がりが判明して、いつか別項で一枠設けたいぐらいネタの詰まった人です。

Note

Doug Rhodes had played hammond organ in this band circa 1965 from around the time after issued 1st single* till around the time before joins Music Machine. Also at least he plays on "She done me" cut on v/a 60s Choice vol.2 (GMG Venus in furs).

It's obsucure about D. Rhodes' beginning point on the Spats. From an interview article on the Ugly Things #18 mag., it's thought two points; first one around after issued 1st single "Gator tails & monkey ribs

before joining The Music Machine. Also at least he played on

during from after the band 1st single out till join in Music Machine.

Additional Note

Stuff released as original Music Machine is only this album entitled 'Turn on'. Next 1967 album on Warner Bros. was released under the name Bonniwell Music Machine, and cut on from some of unissued original Music Machine recordings and some of Bonniwell's new recordings. So it's stuff have a strong character as almost Bonniwell's solo, and also can be heard some posh songs overdubed horns and orchestration etc. However, because no Music Machine can work without him, there is nothing felt a big difference between these two albums except a lilbit over produced sounds.

Wayfarers から Music Machine の原型 Ragamuffins を経て、Sean Bonniwell の積年の想い、コンセプトを完璧な形で一分の隙もなく実現可能にしたのがザ・ミュージック・マシンである。音の1つ1つが精巧に組み立て、造り上げられ、まるで重戦車か装甲車を想わせる凄まじく重量感のあるサウンドと圧倒的エナジーに満ち溢れている。ビジュアル面では、楽器、アンプから衣装、髪の毛に至るまでシーン・ボニウェルのフェイバリット･カラーである黒で埋め尽くし （手袋は左右どちらか1つでよい） "Paint It Black" を、完璧なまでに実践し、一種異様な雰囲気を放ちながら他バンドとの明らかな差別化を図っていた。

'ザ・ミュージック・マシン'、それは1966年に造り上げられた唯一無二のシックスティーズ・プロト・パンク・スタイルなのだ。

オープニングを飾る "Talk Talk" は、この曲だけでビルディングの解体が出来そうなほどのインパクトを叩きつけてくる、打ち鳴らされるタンバリンの力強いこと。"Trouble" の地を這うような、ファズをかましたギター･リフのカッコよさときたら。いつも口ずさんでしまう Neil Diamond "Cherry Cherry" は、トロピカルなアレンジに留まらず、ファズ･ギターまで登場させる辺りザ・ミュージック･マシンを主張してます。シーンがザ・ミュージック･マシンの構想を練り始めたのが "Ed Sullivan Show" で観たザ・ビートルズとの出会いから、ということで Beatles "Taxman" を硬質にカヴァー、このヴォーカルはベースのキースが担当。"Some Other Drum" のようなバラッドも退屈させずに聴かせてしまう彼の力量はやはり素晴らしい。力強い手拍子が印象的な "Masculine Intuition" は、途中から重ねられるコーラスにゾクゾクさせられる。Ma Rainey "See See Rider" は、シーンのシャウトと共に絶妙なタイミングで入ってくる生々しく潰れたファズ･ギター･ソロがいい。間違った世の中に説教たれまくる "Wrong" は、鬼気迫るアレンジが素晴らく、また、彼ららしくちょっと重量感ある ? & The Mysterians "96 Tears" もいい感じ。当時のガールフレンドにインスパイアされて出来上がった "Come on in" は、怪しくエロティック。そして、独自のアレンジが聴き物の Leaves "Hey Joe" で静かに幕を閉じる。

とにかく、ザ・ミュージック･マシンのヘヴィネスなサウンドも然る事ながら、その隙のないアレンジセンスも素晴らしい。

蛇足： モノラル盤とステレオ盤とでは数ヶ所ミックスの違いがある。両方持ってる人は耳をそばだててビミョーな違いを聴き比べてみて。

ティム・ウォレンのパンク魂炸裂!!Crypt のすばらしさを示すに余りある1枚、ザ・ノマッズは、ジ・アウトキャスツ同様同一名が数多く存在したバンドで、彼らは Pebbles vol.12 他に収録された "From zero down" で有名なノース・キャロライナのバンドです。この単独編集盤には、オフィシャルリリースのシングル音源2曲を含む全14曲が収録され、ほとんどが未発表で埋め尽くされてます。

とにかく、こいつらティーンの特権使いまくりで、どこに針を落としても聴こえてくるのは、未加工のプリミティヴ極まりないがむしゃらな歌と演奏。Rolling Stones "Last time" などのカヴァーで比較すると顕著で、オリジナルで多用される基本テクのスライドやハマリングを極力省き、覚えたての調子っぱずれなチョーキングならなんとかっていう超初心者むき出しのギターが初々しい。しかし、カヴァーとヴァージョンを除けば、猪突猛進パンク "From zero down" を始めオリジナルは全8曲、カヴァーして練習っていうより、身の丈に合った好き勝手演奏できる曲作っちゃおうっていう、そんな無謀ながらも純粋でストレートなバンドへの初期衝動は、彼らの演奏にもダイレクトに現れてて、どこまでもピュアなソングライティングとサウンドメイキングはかなり新鮮で刺激的です。

ペンシルヴァニアの学生バンド　ジ・アザー・ハーフは、同州にて1965年にアルバム一枚を残している Half Tribe のベーシストとドラマーによって結成されたバンドで、ジ・アザーハーフとしては、いずれも1966年にこのアルバムとシングルを1枚ずつ残してます。

収録曲は、Chuck Berry "Carol", "Talkin' about you" などスタンダードなロックンロールを中心に、 Rolling Stones "Satisfaction" などザ・ローリング・ストーンズや、ボブ・ディラン、ジェリー&ザ・ペースメイカーズ、あとラムゼイ・ルイスやスティームパケットほどヒップではないにしろ、Ramsey Lewis Trio "The 'in' crowd" なんて変り種のオルガンインストなんかも演ってます。そんな、カヴァー群で埋め尽くされる中、数少ない彼らのオジリナルの1曲 "A lot to live for" は、オープニングでも取り上げてる Them "Gloria" のソロから後半部で聴かれるあの印象的なオルガン・リフ中心に作られており、あのリフのよさもあるけど、極めて出来の良いマイナー・キーパンクに仕上がってて、どことなく Riot Squad "Jump" のメロが漂ってたり、サビは Them "Gloria" からと言うより、そこはかとなく Belfast Gypsies "Gloria's Dream" 似だったりするのが興味深いところ。

こんな感じでまずまず楽しめるレコですが、ただ、全体的というか主にヴォーカルかな？ナイトクラブのカラオケよろしくリバーブをかました様な変な広がりがあって、彼らの意向か、はたまたエンジニアによる意図的な操作か、、どうも教会のような場所での録音による反響音の悪戯の線が濃いような気がするんですが、とにかく、これがこのレコになかなか手が伸びない要因、願わくばもっと生々しいダイレクトな音で録って欲しかった、という感じです。

参考までに、ジャケにメンバーがやたら大勢写ってますが、聴こえてくるサウンドは至ってシンプルな、ローカル・ティーンパンク然としたサウンドです。一応構成は、2×ヴォーカル、2×ギター、あとベース、ドラム、オルガンが各1人ずつ。

彼らは1965年ニューヨークで Radiations としてスタートし、1966年に Outcasts へ改名後リリース数はたった2枚のシングルのみだったものの、1980年代テキサスのダラスを拠点に、アメリカン・ティーン・パンクの貴重な音源を惜しげもなくリリースしまくっていたシカデリック・レーベルの偉業により、上記2枚のシングル＋ザ・レディエイションズの音源2曲を含む未発表＋ライヴ音源で構成されたのがこの編集盤。モノクロのいかしたジャケにもそそられます。

まずは "Nothing but love" のとろけそうな程ピュアでビートの効いたマイナーキーパンクにいかされます。"Something about you" は、胸を打たれるピュアなフォークパンク。Five Americans "Western union" 調の "You'd Be surprised" は、生々しいビートが印象的。"Set me free" は、声を振り絞り出すように歌うヴォーカルに胸が締め付けられる、クルードなリズムのフォークパンク。"Don't press your luck" は、スカスカで騒々しく、どこまでもプリミティヴなサウンドが疾走する！激生々しい音像が胸に突き刺さります。

B面のオープニングを飾る、"I don't have to love you anymore" は、ペブルスで2番目に入手した12番にも収録されてた曲で、聴き倒した曲だけに思い入れも強いマイナーキー・フォークパンク。バカラック・コンポジション Dionne Warwick "Walk on by" は、ピュアなティーンパンク仕立てで好カヴァー。1968年とちょっと時代がいってる "Groovy feeling" は、ニフティーなキンキー・サウンドのオルガン・パンクで、こんな曲が埋もれていたとは信じられない程カッコいいのだ。

とにかく、彼らのサウンドはどこまでもプリミティヴでピュア。

それにしても、当時このグループ名は一体いくつ存在したんだろうか？

ロスのサンサンと降り注ぐ太陽がよく似合うペブルス1番やパンク・クラシックスEP 5番収録の Bo Diddley "Who do you love" のカラッとワイルドなアレンジに殺られて以来彼らには興味津々だったので、こうして全貌が明らかになって非常に嬉しいです。8曲中6曲がプリーチャーズ名義で、"Mornin'" を含む2曲が変名リリース。

鍵盤担当がジャズ畑出身という事もあって、Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers のヴァージョンがオリジナルになるのかな？ "Mornin'" を、ほんのりジャズ色を残しながらパンク仕立てにしてたり、鍵盤大活躍の "Zeke" では、モッド・ジャズ寄りのサウンドメイキングだったり、他の U.S. パンク・バンドとは一味違うって感じです。ゼムやザ・ホイールズ系のアイリッシュ R&B 臭プンプンで、とにかくカッコいいです。

ニューハンプシャーのコンコードにあった Foul Dogs が通う St.Mark's School の目と鼻の先にあった St.Paul's Academy にもやはりいた、'ザ・ローリング・ストーンズ' 成り切りのローカルバンド、ラスプーチン&ザ・モンクスが残した唯一の音源集です。

1966年に製作された 'Sun of My Soul' というタイトルの原盤では、同校の Octet という聖歌隊と共に片面ずつ編集されており、恐らく卒業記念にでも作られたものなのでは？そして、ここに紹介する海賊盤は、その聖歌隊の音源と写真を削って、彼らの単独盤として変則的な片面エッジ仕様となってます。

全編ザ・ローリング・ストーンズとボ･ディドリー、そしてラヴィン・スプーンフルのカヴァーで占められ、彼らの未加工で剥き出しの顔もほころぶローカル・ヤンキー・サウンドは、正に1960年代のマミーズ？とでも例えたくなります。

いきなり飛び出す超プリミティヴな Beatles "I wanna be your man" は、極限まで音数が削られており、目一杯悪ぶったヴォーカルと、ローカルな激情を叩きつけるサウンドの突進力が素晴らしい。Rolling Stones "Gotta gey away" は、プリミティヴなサウンドに加え、ティーンな青さも丸出しだ。Rolling Stones "19th nervous breakdown" も拙くていい出来、こいつらはアップテンポなサウンドで力を発揮してます。

しかし、Arthur Alexander "You better move on", Lovin' Spoonful "You didn't have to be so nice", Rolling Stones "As tears go by" etc. 女の子にモテるにはソフトロック系バラード系も必要だろう。そして、ラストを締めるティーンの激情をぶつけまくった Bo Diddley "Roadrunner" は、エンディングのたどたどしさも含めて最高！

・First appeared as The English Muffins in Virginia, 1966, and in 1967, renamed to The Seventh Seal, and shortly after in the same year, they recorded this album for Justice label in New York city, but it's never issued in those days.

1966年にシングル1枚を残している Virginia の学生グループ English Muffins を前身に、1967年に Seventh Seal へ改名。このアルバムは、同1967年にニューヨークのローカルパンク専門レーベル Justice へ吹き込むもお蔵入りになってたもので、32年の時を経て限定400枚という小ロットながらやっと日の目を見た代物。その後、数年は存続するも公式に残した音源は大幅なメンバーチェンジ後にリリースした1968年のシングル1枚のみ。

オリジナルとカヴァーが約半々で、大きく分けると3つの流れがあり、Kinks "Till the end of the day" など、ブリティッシュ・インヴェイション中心のカヴァーもの、Wilson Pickett "Midnight hour" など、ブルーズ〜ブラック・リズム・アンド・ブルーズ系のカヴァーもの、そして、English Muffins 時代の再演 "It's my pride" を含むムーディ・フォーク〜マイナーキーのオリジナル・パンク群、何れにせよ全体から受ける印象は夜霧に包まれたスモーキーなローカル・パンク・マナー。エンディングは、長尺ブルーズ Paul Butterfield "I've got a mind to give up livin'" で、なかなかの好演とともに、また〜りと熱〜い余韻を残して締められてます。全体の色を考えると、リズム&ブルーズ系のカヴァーはどうかな？ってとこですが、トワイライト〜ムーディ系ファンには十分アピールする内容ではないかと。
